Chapter 27

Death crept upon Harry, nearly choking him, followed by a strong static charge. Harry jerked his hand away as an electric jolt hit him square in the chest. Ginny yelped and jumped back.

“What the hell was that?” Bill Rankin said, rubbing his hands and face.

The hairs at the back of Harry’s neck prickled. He spun back to the room and noticed a man in a white dress shirt, no tie. Harry hadn’t seen him before.

The man in the white shirt rose calmly from the back row and walked to the doorway where he stopped and looked back at Harry.

“Who is that man?” Harry said, ignoring the senator’s question.

Bill Rankin followed his gaze. “Fred Savage, my new chief-of-staff.” There was a thin man sitting on the back row near the door writing furiously on a note pad. “He’s replacing Carl and insists on working on the speech I was to give yesterday.”

Harry followed the senator’s stare, but Bill Rankin wasn’t looking at the man standing behind Savage. “Not him,” he said. “The man in the doorway.”

The man was now smiling at Harry, and when he turned to leave, he shimmered and was gone. He’d simply vanished. Harry nearly choked as he tried to swallow.

“Are you okay?” Ginny said, touching his arm.

They hadn’t seen what just happened. He wiped away a bead of sweat running down his brow. “No, I’m not. Look.” He pulled Ginny’s arm into an urgent grasp, making her focus. “Brief your brother about what’s been happening. And don’t leave this room. I’ll tell those two agents stuffing themselves at the table to get their asses in here.”

He turned to leave, but Ginny stopped him. “What’s this about?”

Harry shook his head. “Trouble. Just stay put. When they get here, tell the agents to do their job and protect your brother. He’s in danger.” He gave the senator a brief look. “And don’t let him wander from this spot. I’ll be right back—I hope.”

Harry spotted the man walking casually through the front door and onto the porch. He followed him, but the man had already rounded the side of the house. Harry quickly scanned the front yard. Kids were tossing a football. He turned the corner of the house where a thick stand of crepe myrtle had showered the rich lawn with pink petals.

He cleared the last of the branches and almost ran into the man’s raised hand. He had his palm out. Distorted air seemed to be emanating from it. The wave hit Harry square in the chest, stopping him.

“There,” the man said. “Close enough.”

He still had the stupid smile on his face. There was the beginning of a tattoo, a web design starting high on both sides of his neck. And Harry noticed something else. Evil. He could “smell” the same stench he’d picked up in Jack’s apartment and, again, just a moment ago on the senator. It saturated the man. Harry grimaced, wishing he had a drink to wash away the stink, so thick he could taste it like a sour burning menagerie of oils.
